Unique star quality – The Guardian
Deirdre O’Kane became a stand-up comic in 1996 and was in the final of the BBC New Comedy Awards in Edinburgh. She continues to play that festival regularly as well as touring to Melbourne, Adelaide and Kilkenny International Festivals. She has also done gigs in The Middle East, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Prague, Brussels and London, where she now lives.

Deirdre’s television career took off rapidly as she hosted a ten-part TV series of stand-up comedy and sketches called The Lounge (RTE) which included guests such as Rich Hall, Adam Hills, Jeff Green and Dara O’Briain. She also played the role of Fiona in Owen O’Neill’s sitcom The Fitz (BBC).
O’Kane is an instantly charismatic stage presence and her brand of
day-to-day anarchism stormed the place – Three Weeks Magazine
In 2003 Deirdre was described in the Sunday Times as “absolutely superb” played the leading role of Helen in Paths to Freedom, a six-part spoof-documentary for RTE/BBC Choice. The following year she starred in the award-winning RTE series Fergus’s Wedding as well as appearing at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal which was edited into a series for television hosted by Ed Byrne.

A film career followed and Deirdre has played roles in movies such as Intermission with Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy, Colm Meany and Kelly McDonald and the BAFTA-nominated Festival with Chris O’Dowd and Stephen Mangan.

In 2008 she was nominated for Best Actress at the IFTA’s in Bittersweet, a two-part comedy drama for RTE. Her most recent appearance was in The Whistleblowers for Carnival Films/ITV and she has also been touring the hit one-woman show My Brilliant Divorce over the past two years.
