Colin Murphy is a writer, documentary maker and journalist.
As a playwright, he has written an acclaimed play about the Irish banking crisis, Guaranteed!, and also its follow-up Bailed Out, as well as the short plays Guaranteed Irish and Dublin Noir, all for Fishamble: The New Play Company. His latest play, also for Fishamble, is Inside the GPO which will premiere in March, celebrating the 1916 centenary. Colin won an IFTA nomination for The Guarantee, the screen adaptation of his banking crisis play. It was produced by John Kelleher Media and supported by the Irish Film Board and TV3. Trailer below.
His most recent screenwriting includes an episode of Trial of the Century, a landmark historical drama for Treasure Entertainment and TV3.
He wrote the script for Sanctuary, a series of ultra-short “verbatim” monologues about asylum, produced by Fomacs, which screened on RTÉ and at various festivals, and which was based on his own work as a journalist investigating asylum issues. As a journalist, he has reported from Morocco, Western Sahara, Angola and Mozambique as well as on Irish and European affairs. He worked in Angola as an aid worker for two years, and returned there to shoot the documentary Anglo After the War, which he directed for RTÉ. He has made radio documentaries for RTÉ and Radio France Internationale and has written for Le Monde Diplomatique, Prospect and The New Internationalist, as well as most of the Irish print media. He was a staff reporter and critic with Village, theatre critic with The Sunday Tribune (nominated for Arts Journalist of the Year) and deputy editor of Magill. He currently writes a weekly column on theatre for The Irish Independent.
