Comedy took on a trad feel in Galway recently, when Des Bishop decided the intimacy of the iconic trad music venue Róisín Dubh was the perfect environment for the filming of his sixth DVD, Desfunctional. Having performed Desfunctional to thousands of people across the globe, this time, it was in front of an audience of only 150 people. The gig was the live stand up equivalent of a trad music session, intimate and powerful. Des invited musicians from the Trad Band Gráda to open. With an extensive collection of hilariously funny, yet thoroughly stimulating emotional material, Desfunctional goes on sale Friday, 6 November through all good retailers.
“You always turn everything into a joke!” is something often heard by comedian Des Bishop, and is what most audience members would think was the whole point of comedy. But what happens when too many people in your life have heard the punchlines and can’t see the joke anymore? Desfunctional takes a look at why people feel uncomfortable when the joke turns personal. It’s a journey through a life of emotional and sexual dysfunction, which hopes to turn the cold giggles of escapism into the warm laughter that comes from getting real on stage.
Raised in America but educated in Ireland, Des Bishop rocketed to stardom with the incredible success of his RTE television show ‘The Des Bishop Experience’, and most recently the award winning ‘In the Name of the Fada’. Des just completed a sell out international tour of his latest stand up show Desfunctional which took him all over the world performing in venues in Melbourne, Sydney, London, New York and Edinburgh.
