James is from Donaghmore Co.Tyrone and is a graduate of the Gaiety School of Acting where he was awarded Gaiety Theatre Bursary Award. As part of the school’s mentorship programme James worked with director Jimmy Fay in writing and staging Disappeared , a one man show , as part of the Manifesto Showcase at the Complex in Smithfield. His credits include The Drugs Don’t Work and Cedric (Dungannon Footlights); Blood Wedding, Toxic and The Bee Loud Glade (Project Arts Centre); Corcadorca’s production of The Winter’s Tale, directed by Pat Kiernan (Cork Opera House); The Abbey Theatre’s production of Roddy Doyles reworking of Gogol’s The Government Inspector , directed by Jimmy Fay (Abbey Theatre); Philadelphia, Here I Come! , directed by Andrew Flynn (Lyric, Belfast). James played Gerald Arbuthnot in Patrick Mason’s staging of A Woman of No Importance at the Gate Theatre Dublin and Larry in the Gate’s Dublin Theatre Festival offering The Last Summer, directed by Toby Frow. As part of the 1st Irish Theatre Festival in New York James joined the ensemble cast of Ross Dungan’s hugely popular The Life & Sort of Death of Eric Argyle, directed by Dan Heard (59E59).
James will appear as Ansgar in Season 3 of the History Channel’s Vikings.
